Buyers shifting to wheat

Wheat grades made up the majority of volume trading through the exchange last week as value emerged for specific grades and locations, drawing renewed buyer interest.

Traded prices are regularly happening at better prices than the highest published cash bid for the same grade and location.

16 grades of wheat traded covering all quality types from high protein milling grades through to feed and seconds.

  • H2 was trading $337/t track port equivalent Kembla (+$9/t above the best published cash bid at the site), $314/t Adelaide (+$6/t above), and $350/t FIS in WA (+10/t).

  • Higher protein H1 was fetching $420/t in the west (+60/t).

  • ASW1 wheat was trading $315/t Kembla and Melbourne (+$5/t and $4/t respectively), $308/t Adelaide (+10/t), and AWW1 in the west (similar grade to ASW1) was trading $323/t FIS Kwinana (+$3/t).

  • There was little price difference from ASW1 to the lower grades.

Barley continues to price well relative to wheat with feed barley trading $308/t Kembla (+$5/t), $295/t Lincoln (+$9/t), and $328/t Kwinana (+$1/t). Planet malt was trading significant premiums over feed in Melbourne at $352/t (+$9/t).

Markets for pulse crops remain active with lentils trading across the southern port zones at $662/t Giles and $652/t Portland as examples. Faba's were trading $440/t Adelaide (+$40) and $437/t Wallaroo. Lupins trading $350/t in the west (+10/t).

The oat market was also coming together in the west to trade volume at $325/t (+$5/t).

Growers are impacting the price of Australian grain by offering grain for sale and leading the direction of all bids.

30 buyers purchased grain through Clear Grain Exchange (grain stored in warehouse) and igrainX (grain stored on-farm) last week.

Additionally, 41 buyers were bidding for grain offered for sale and 110 buyers made 6,612 searches for grain offered for sale.

Regardless of where prices are being bid, growers and their agents can offer grain for sale at prices they're targeting to sell. If you have a sell price in mind, it's time to put it out there.

Don’t just offer grain for sale when you're a seller, offer grain for sale when you know prices you'd sell for. More growers are doing this and they're impacting prices.

There are plenty of buyers for Australian grain. Make it easier for all buyers to try and buy your grain.

Set your price, impact the market, and know that if the market reaches your price it will sell. Your grain can't sell at the price you want if you don't have it out there offered for sale.

There’s no downside in offering your grain for sale, only upside – why wouldn’t you offer all of your grain for sale at prices you're happy with? Be proactive, take control, and offer.

The prices traded through the exchange at a port track (eastern states) or FIS (in WA) level are provided below, but if you're reading this email you will have your own CGX account so login and use it to see what's trading, what's offered, and what's being bid at sites to help you determine the value of grain in your area.
